We have compiled a list of resources at the national, state and county levels (Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe) that families may find useful. The availability of information on the web is vast, hence this list is only representative of some of the resources available to families. National Resources
- Affordable Colleges Online – A resource tool to help students and parents identify colleges, degree programs and scholarship opportunities that fit their academic and financial wants and needs.
- The Arc – The Arc of the United States (The Arc) advocates for and serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. To find a local chapter, visit their website.”
- Autism Speaks – Autism Speaks is the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
- Cerebral Palsy Guide – A national organization that helps families and individuals affected by cerebral palsy. We provide educational material about CP so that parents and caregivers can be better prepared for raising a child affected by this developmental disorder.
- Community for Accredited Online Schools – A comprehensive accreditation resource that provides prospective students and families with the tools needed to make well-informed decisions about their education. They have put together a Guidebook for Visually Impaired Students. It provides a comprehensive resource where students can find scholarships and information about Assistive technology
- National Disabled Veterans Business Council – A not-for-profit organization designed to unite and to represent the thousands of disabled veteran business owners throughout the country. Through their mission they are able to assist individual veterans as well. Click on the above link to learn about their new veterans affordable housing, continuing education and workforce development initiatives.
- National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities – A central source of information on disabilities in infants, toddlers, children, and youth. Here, you’ll also find easy-to-read information on IDEA, the law authorizing early intervention services and special education, as well as many articles and publications. You can also search their listing of state resources to find the disabilities agencies and organizations in your state.
- National Organization for Rare Disorders – NORD is dedicated to helping the nearly 30 million Americans with rare diseases, and the organizations that serve them, through programs of education, advocacy, research, and patient services.
State Resources
- The ACCESS (Automated Community Connection to Economic Self Sufficiency ) Florida Program helps to promote strong and economically self-sufficient communities by providing food, cash and medical assistance to individuals and families on the road to economic recovery.
- Agency for Persons with Disabilities – APD provides supports for persons with developmental disabilities in Living, Learning, and Working in their Communities. The 6 qualifying disability categories are: Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabiliy, Prader Willi, Spina Bifida, and an At Risk category.
- Children Medical Services – CMS provides a broad range of medical, therapeutic and supportive services for eligible children with special health care needs and their families. Their services focus on helping your child grow up healthier and include prevention and early intervention services, primary care, medical and therapeutic specialty care, and long term care. Financial criteria must be met to qualify for these services.
- Disability Rights Florida – A statewide designated protection and advocacy system for individuals with disabilities in the State of Florida. Provides free services. Visit their website through the above link to find your local representative.
- Disasters Resistant Communities Group – Provides a host of disaster planning and preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation services to local government agencies and departments as well as community and faith based organizations. Maintains the Just In Time Disaster Training Library to provide a single, easy to search source in which individuals, agencies and organizations can access on-line training videos. The library has also an Individuals with Disabilities section. With over 1,700 disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery training videos the library is the most comprehensive, easy to search, FREE internet based source for training curriculum for today’s emergency responders.
- Early Steps is Florida’s Early Intervention system that offers services to eligible infants and toddlers (birth to thirty-six months) with significant delays or a condition likely to result in a developmental delay.
- Florida Alliance for Assistive Service and Technology . Dedicated to improve the quality of life for all Floridians with disabilities through advocacy and awareness activities that increase access to and acquisition of assistive services and technology. The South Florida Demonstration Center serves the following counties: Miami-Dade, Monroe, Broward, Palm Beach, Collier, Hendry, Lee, and Charlotte. Learn More
- Family Care Council Florida – FCC’s mission is to advocate, educate and empower individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Visit their site to find local, state and national resources and on-line trainings.
- Florida Developmental Disabilities Council – Their mission is to advocate and promote meaningful participation in all aspects of life for Floridians with developmental disabilities. Check their Resources section to find a wide array of publications, and videos on past workshops in special education law.
- The Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System – FDLRS provides diagnostic and instructional support services to district exceptional student education programs and families of students with exceptionalities statewide.
- Supplemental Security Income – SSI is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes) is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income and resources; Apply for SSI Benefits.
