Who We Are

The UM Child Protection Team (CPT) was established at the University of Miami, School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics in January 1980. The Child Protection Team (CPT) program is a medically directed, multidisciplinary program that works with local law enforcement and the Department of Children and Family Services in cases of suspected child abuse and neglect to supplement investigation activities.

What We Do

The CPT program supplements child protective services investigations by providing expertise in evaluating alleged maltreatments of abuse and neglect, assessing risk factors, and providing recommendations for interventions to protect children and enhance families’ capabilities to provide a safer environment when possible. This multidisciplinary team is comprised of pediatricians, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologist, and social workers, who conduct medical examinations, specialized/forensic interviews, psychosocial evaluations, and psychological evaluations, and provide training in the community and expert witness court testimony.

In addition, Child Protection Team staff also provide training services including:

  • Training for child protection investigators and other community providers of child welfare services.
  • Training for emergency room staff and other medical providers in the community.
  • UMSOM medical and psychology students, interns, and residency training in child maltreatment

Who We Serve

UM-CPT provides these services to victims 0-18 years of age and their families in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

What We Cost

Section 39.303, Florida Statutes, authorizes the Children’s Medical Services Program in the Department of Health to develop, maintain, and coordinate Child Protection Team services through contracts with local community-based programs under the CMS Division of Prevention and Intervention.
