Mission

The Self-Advocate Leadership Training program (SALT) aims to teach a leadership skills curriculum to individuals with disabilities so that they can learn strategies to advocate for themselves and others and to effect larger systems-level change.

Vision

To produce an ever-growing cadre of individuals with the capacity for self-determination and independence and the ability to participate in their communities in meaningful ways.

Selection Process

Criteria

  • Must be over the age of 18 
  • Preferred: some leadership experience and potential for growth
  • Cross-disability candidates 

Process

  1. Nomination
  2. Complete one-page application
  3. Participate in interview

Classes

  • Offered twice a year at the Mailman Center in Miami.

Curriculum

Three-day intensive (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

  1. Disability history and civil rights, self-advocacy, values
  2. Self-determination
  3. Communication
  4. Problem solving
  5. Legislative advocacy
  6. Knowing Your Rights
  7. Interdependence/power, alone vs. together
  8. Check-in groups
  9. Opportunity to mentor/become a SALT trainer
