Achieving Health and Equity for People with Disabilities Across the Lifespan

The transition to adulthood is a continuous process of developmental change. It is an important and exciting time for all young people, including those with disabilities. In this Mailman Center Innovation and Connection Conference, physicians, attorneys, speech and language pathologists, mental health practitioners, parents, and self-advocates will share their knowledge and experiences regarding the realities of transitioning into adulthood. Addressing issues and exploring strategies on communication, mental health, guardianship, and healthcare will be presented to assist families and practitioners alike.

Learning Objectives
- How to develop the proper mental attitude when interfacing with people with disabilities.
- Uncover social determinates of health for persons with disabilities and how to address
- Identify what is and types of assistive technology (AT)
- Identify and discuss some of the barriers facing the treatment of mental illness in transitional-aged young people with ID/DD
- Contrast guardianship (limited, plenary, guardian advocacy) vs less restrictive alternatives (supported decision-making, powers of attorney, etc.)
- Discuss clinical best practices for adults with ID/DD in primary care

Meet our Speakers
Christina Givner
Christina Givner is a pediatric bi-lingual speech language pathologist at the University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development. She graduated from Florida State University with her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders. During her time at FSU, she was an active member of Dance Marathon at FSU, FSU Homecoming Executive Committee, Oscar Arias Hispanic Honor Society, and Alpha Delta Pi Fraternity. Prior to working at the Mailman Center, Christina worked at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (Dec 2017 – Dec 2020), Speech Pathology of Coral Gables (Aug 2020 – Sep 2020), and Kinetic Kids (Oct 2016 – Nov 2017). She joined the Mailman Center in January 2021 and has had the fortunate opportunity to be a part of the following clinic teams: Augmentative and Alternative Communication Clinic (AAC Clinic), Interdisciplinary Developmental Evaluation Service Clinic (IDES Clinic), Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic (CLP Clinic), and the Outpatient Speech Therapy Clinic. In addition, Christina has had the opportunity to be a member of the UM team that was awarded the FAAST Grant. FAAST stands for the Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology. FAAST is Florida’s state assistive technology program. As a result of these clinic and grant placements, Christina has had the opportunity to present research regarding assistive technology at two national conferences (ASHA 2021 and ATIA 2022). Christina is of Hispanic descent and is passionate about supporting individuals through the use of assistive technology, as well as empowering the individuals she works with through collaboration and innovative thinking.
Leigh Markowitz
Leigh Markowitz graduated from Duke University School of Law in 2019, and then spent a year clerking for Florida's Fourth District Court of Appeal, before joining the team here at NSU. In law school, Professor Markowitz served as the Special Projects Editor for the Duke Journal of Constitutional Law and Public Policy. She also spent three years as the president of Duke's student chapter of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, during which time she organized and hosted two successful animal law conferences, which brought in speakers from across the country. Professor Markowitz’s commitment to clinical education was fostered during the three semesters she spent in Duke's Environmental Law and Public Policy Clinic, where she represented non-profits pursuing environmental justice.
The mother of a 35 year old son with Down Syndrome, Pippa has acquired a lifetime of knowledge and experience as his advocate and facilitator and passing along this lived experience to others has become a very important part of her life. She presents on Transitioning to Adulthood as part of the University of Miami Mailman Center LEND Program and is on the Coral Gables Disability Affairs Advisory Board.
