The Miami Surgical Outcomes Research Program (MiSORP) will assess the impact of surgical procedures on patients, society, and the healthcare system to improve the practice of surgery through research and innovation.
To carry out that vision, the MiSORP is structured to provide access to research support including biostatistical/epidemiological services and data management help across the twenty-two divisions and sections DeWitt Daugherty Family Department of Surgery. Our goal is to provide a secure, successful, and sustainable clinical research experience for our students, residents, and faculty.
MiSORP Members

Our Goals

  • Support surgical faculty and trainees interested in Surgical Research and provide the resources and skills to engage in outcomes research.
  • Engage in quality research to advance studies of surgery outcomes.
  • Provide study design, biostatistical, and machine learning support services to assist surgeons in building the capacity for research, with a particular focus on developing funded studies.
  • Maintain a database library to empower surgeons and collaborators to utilize large datasets, assist users with the process of complying with all training and regulatory requirements for those datasets, and streamline the research process by preparing analysis-ready data extracts.
  • Provide expertise in study design, database analysis, biostatistical methods and artificial intelligence (including machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing).
  • Provide a centralized service to support the computational needs of researchers within the department.
  • Mentor residents, fellows, and junior faculty with the aim of developing well balanced researchers.

Core Capabilities

We recommend involving one of our epidemiologists/biostatisticians from the very beginning of the project (prior to data collection or extraction). This will facilitate optimal study design and analysis.

  • Database queries
  • Data management, cleaning, and manipulation
  • Assistance with study design
  • Statistical analyses
  • Preparation of tables and figures
  • Power and sample size calculations
  • Writing of statistical analysis sections of grant proposals, manuscripts, and abstracts
  • Writing and editing results sections of manuscripts and abstracts
  • Reviewing and editing final abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals prior to submission
  • Responding to grant and manuscript reviewers’ comments
