Students Interested in Plastic Surgery (SIPS)

Plastic Surgery

Who we are

SIPS is a students interest group at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine – University of Miami that assists medical students to better understand and explore the encompassing field of plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery. Our mission is to allow interested students to cultivate and nurture their interest in plastic surgery by interacting with the Division of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery faculty, staff, and residents. SIPS brings together students with similar interests and provides them the opportunity to shadow cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. We also offer seminars teaching proper suturing and scrubbing techniques in addition to talks on the various aspects of plastic surgery.

Plastic Surgery is one of the most competitive residencies to enter. As such, gaining early understanding of the application process and networking is absolutely is essential. Our group will help to guide students as they explore the road to becoming a plastic surgeon. Mentoring by current plastic surgery residents, fellows and attendings will be invaluable. Our student interest group provides such information about the residency application process and about personal experiences in the field by holding an annual post match panel. Additionally, SIPS helps to facilitate student research in plastic surgery by finding appropriate research mentors and projects for students.

Overall, our goal is to create an available resource for students by providing them with an enjoyable, informative and well-rounded introduction to the amazing field that is plastic and reconstructive surgery.
