Carl I Schulman

Carl I. Schulman, MD, MSPH, PhD, FACS

Director, William Lehman Injury Research Center

Dr. Schulman is an academic surgeon with a research focus on Injury Prevention. He holds a Master of Science degree in Public Health and a PhD in Epidemiology.  Dr. Schulman performs population-based research in various areas of injury prevention. Dr. Schulman is an active Burn surgeon at the University of Miami’s Ryder Trauma Center, the only Level 1 trauma center for all of Miami-Dade county. Dr. Schulman oversees the staff of the William Lehman Injury Research Center on projects related to education, injury prevention, and the dissemination of information leading to leading to improved care for the victims of traumatic injuries.
 
Kevin Miller

Kevin Miller

Program Manager, William Lehman Injury Research Center

Kevin Miller started with the William Lehman Injury Research Center in 2009 as a Clinical Systems Analyst working on a program sponsored by the Department of Defense called MobileCare.  MobileCare is a mobile-based suite of integrated applications designed to be used in environments such as military deployments, natural disaster environments, and hospitals.  Clinicians are able to create patient documentation, view data, lab results, progress notes, radiology, pathology and surgical documentation in real time. In 2013, Kevin transitioned into his current role.  Kevin is responsible for total program management of the WLIRC and has expertise in all phases of program management, including reporting, budgeting, planning, contracting and vendor management.  Before coming to the Lehman Center, Kevin was the Director of Implementation and Training for a leading specialty-based electronic medical record company where he oversaw a team of specialists supporting clients around the country and in Puerto Rico.

Salma Hernandez

Salma Hernandez, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC

Clinical Content Coordinator

Salma Hernandez received her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a focus on healthcare disparities from the University of Miami in 2014.  Dr. Hernandez holds a BSN and an MSN from Barry University.  She is a board-certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with over 10 years of clinical experience in Surgical Critical Care and Trauma.  She currently practices in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

At the William Lehman Injury Research Center (WLIRC) she serves as the Clinical Education Coordinator for their curriculum development and training programs.  In this role she facilitates training and education for US Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of State personnel.  In her most recent projects, she aids in the development and implementation of the Tactical Combat Casualty Care curriculums for the DOD and has established a virtual continuing education program for Department of State personnel deployed in Iraq.

Kelly Withum

Kelly Withum, MSPH

Kelly Withum, MSPH, earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Miami in 2008. She received her Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Miami in 2013. She was a research assistant on a NSF/ NIEHS funded public health research study and co-authored several publications on marine water quality health effects. In 2009, she began at the WLIRC as a research associate for several human subjects research grants from the Department of Defense, Department of State, and Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center. Ms. Withum’s experience includes: the effectiveness of mobile learning videos for trauma education, just-in-time learning for mass casualty incident preparedness, and tele-training for medical professionals in the Middle East. Currently, she coordinates the research conducted with the BMW North American Accident Research Program which evaluates crashes across the United States to further improve vehicle safety.
Francisca Valiente

Francisca Valiente

Francisca Valiente is the Budget Manager for the WLIRC.  She graduated from Montclair State University, NJ in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Upon graduating, Fran moved to Miami, FL. She has worked for the University of Miami since 1985. Fran started in Medical Sponsored Programs and then transitioned to the department of Surgery, William Lehman Injury Research Center. She has served in 3 positions while working for the Lehman Center.  Currently she is the Budget Manager. She is accountable for monitoring budgets and ensuring compliance with University of Miami policies.

Lilliam Morcate

Liliam Morcate is a Finance Assistant and graduated from the University of Havana, La Havana, Cuba in 1992 with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). Two years after graduating, she moved to Miami, FL. She has worked at the University of Miami since coming to Miami, in the Department of Surgery, William Lehman Injury Research Center.
