Biography
Dr. Garcia-Buitrago is a board-certified academic anatomic and clinical pathologist and cytopathologist. Her clinical activities are focused on gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreatobiliary pathology, as well as cytopathology at the UM/JHS clinical complex and academically-oriented medical facilities. Dr. Garcia-Buitrago's research is focused primarily on the identification of molecular genetic mechanisms and the discovery of immunohistochemical biomarkers useful for diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of behavior of gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and hepatobiliary neoplasms as well as on the identification of new immunomarkers that can be used in surgical pathology and cytopathology specimens. Dr. Garcia-Buitrago has been the primary author or significantly contributing co-author of over 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters and has lectured at many national and international conferences in the areas of gastrointestinal pathology and cytopathology.

Dr. Garcia-Buitrago's research focuses primarily on the identification of molecular mechanisms and the discovery of immunohistochemically biomarkers useful for diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of the behavior of gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and pancreatic neoplasms. Her efforts are focused on the identification of new markers that can be used in surgical pathology and cytopathology. Dr. Garcia-Buitrago is also actively involved in ongoing clinical trials focused on the evaluation of the efficacy of different chemotherapy regimens and targeted therapies.
