Graduate Medical Education

The University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine was founded in 1952 as the first medical school in Florida and is acclaimed nationally and internationally for research, patient care, education and community service in the United States, South American, and the Caribbean.

It has over 200 students in each of the four year classes, training opportunities in multiple tracks such as the four year MD/MPH track and the MD/PhD track. Serving more than five million people as the only academic medical center in South Florida, the Miller School of Medicine has earned international acclaim for its patient care and research innovations. In Miami, The Miller School of Medicine campus consists of 35 acres within the 80-acre complex of the Miami Health District, including more than 2 million square feet of research space, and ranks in the top third among U.S. medical schools in terms of research funding awarded.

In 2007, the Miller School established the Regional Campus, which now includes Broward County and Palm Beach County. UMMSM students in the 4-year dual degree MD/MPH program complete third year clinical clerkships and fourth year requirements at Regional Campuses in our affiliated hospitals and with our full-time and affiliated faculty. These experiences have been very successful and extremely well-received by the students. Students from the main campus have also elected to fulfill some of their requirements on the regional campus.

Holy Cross Hospital, a private Catholic non-profit community hospital, is a part of trinity health and opened in 1955 to serve the sick and injured without regard to race, religion, or nationality. Holy Cross contains one of the greatest concentrations of medical talent in South Florida. The medical staff consists of more than 600 highly skilled physicians representing nearly every specialty in medicine. Their skills attract patients from around South Florida, across the United States, and around the globe. Since opening its doors, Holy Cross grows to keep pace with the needs of the community it serves. The Hospital´s rapid growth has allowed us to advance with the dramatic improvements achieved in healthcare.

Holy Cross is a site for exceptional interdisciplinary teaching opportunities. Through its partnership with University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and nearby educational institutions, it is a training site for nurses, physician assistants, UMMSM medical students, and now residents. It is in this interdisciplinary environment that our students and residents learn to provide high-caliber compassionate health care while lead discoveries, and gain the experience necessary to become the next generation of medical leaders.
