Joan St. Onge, M.D., FACP

Senior Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education

Dr. St. Onge graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine and continued her training in Internal Medicine at the Georgetown University Hospital. After her chief residency, she joined the faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Georgetown, and began her career as a Clinician Educator. She has served as Program Director in two academic institutions before coming to the University in 2008. Dr. St. Onge has been involved in the development of the Regional Campus, working with the medical students as Integrated Medicine Clerkship Director, and Assistant Dean of Clinical Curriculum before becoming the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at UMMSM. A member of Alpha Omega Alpha, she has received a number of awards for teaching, including being named the Teacher of the Year by the ACP Florida Chapter in 2012. Dr. St. Onge lives in the Fort Lauderdale area with her husband and two sons. She is an avid walker, beachgoer, and cook.

Barry Gelman, M.D., MEd

Designated Institutional Officer

Dr. Gelman graduated from the University of Miami and the University of Florida College of Medicine. He completed pediatric residency at North Shore University Hospital/Cornell University Medical College in Manhasset, NY, and fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System (UM/JHS) in Miami, FL. He earned a master’s degree in medical education/curriculum and instruction from the University of Cincinnati College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Gelman has been involved in all levels of medical education for more than 30 years. He served as core program director for General Pediatrics from 2002-2020, and as a member of both the GME and GME Executive Committees at UM/JHS. He has served as the Vice-Chairman for Education in the Department of Pediatrics at the Miller School of Medicine (MSOM) since 2006. He has been honored as both Fellow and Attending of the Year by pediatric residents and was bestowed the prestigious Paff Award for Excellence in Medical Education in 2017 by the MSOM students.

Dr. Gelman is board-certified in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and holds clinical privileges in both at Holtz Children’s Hospital/JHS. He served as the Chief Medical Officer for Holtz Children’s and The Women’s Hospital in the JHS from 2010-2025.

Dr. Gelman lives in Pembroke Pines, FL with his wife Donna and their terrier mix, Sally. They are parents to two adult sons, Scott (daughter-in law Samantha) and Joshua. He enjoys time with family, reading, UM sports, and is - with sadly little enjoyment – a fan of the NY Mets and Jets.
