Providing excellence in diagnostic services and specialized testing for patients with benign and malignant breast conditions, the Breast Pathology Service is led by Dr. Carmen Gomez-Fernandez. Dr. Gomez-Fernandez is a tenured Professor of Pathology and serves as Vice-Chair of Education. Board-certified in Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology, she has over 20 years of experience in diagnostic pathology with focused expertise in cytopathology as well as breast and head & neck surgical subspecialties where she currently serves as Director. Dr. Gomez-Fernandez’s research interests have centered on the use of immunohistochemistry and molecular biomarkers for breast and head & neck surgical pathology and cytopathology. Under her direction, the Tissue Bank at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center participated in several collaborations with the NIH Cancer Genome Atlas program, specifically including breast cancers, head & neck squamous cell cancers, lung cancers, and bladder cancers.
The faculty of the Breast Pathology Service combines expertise in the diagnosis of common and challenging breast lesions with years of experience in the application of prognostic and predictive molecular markers. This service evaluates approximately 2200 in-house cases a year and provides international and national consultation services. The division also provides specialized laboratory testing including immunohistochemistry and FISH for the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of breast cancer patients.
