Biography
Dr. Sameer Al Diffalha is a faculty member at the University of Miami, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, with a specialty in Anatomic Pathology and subspecialty expertise in gastrointestinal and breast pathology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Damascus, where he also completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology before moving to the United States for advanced training. He subsequently completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Loyola University Medical Center, followed by fellowships in Surgical Pathology and Gastrointestinal Pathology at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center.
Throughout his career, Dr. Al Diffalha has made significant contributions to clinical service, research, and education. Among his most notable accomplishments are:
1. Serving as Director of the UAB Tissue Biorepository, the Pathology Core Research Laboratory, and the Tissue Procurement Shared Resource (TPRO) for the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center (OCCC), where he played a pivotal role in advancing biobanking and translational research initiatives.
2. Leading the GI Pathology Service and GI Pathology Fellowship at UAB, where he mentored numerous trainees, including residents and fellows.
3. Serving as Vice Chair for Outreach, where he oversaw and directed UAB’s community pathology practices, covering Montgomery, Anniston, and Gadsden, Alabama.
4. Publishing extensively in high-impact journals and contributing to authoritative medical texts, including a chapter in Sleisenger and Fordtran’s Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease.
5. Receiving multiple teaching and leadership honors, such as the Argus Award for Best Educator and recognition for his leadership during the COVID-19 response. His dedication to academic pathology, mentorship of residents and fellows, and leadership in global pathology outreach continue to influence both the scientific community and the next generation of pathologists. -
