Professor Emeritus of Clinical Neurological Surgery

Dr. Glenn Morrison is retired from patient care, yet continues to play an active role in the education of University of Miami residents and fellows in the field of pediatric neurosurgery. Dr. Glenn Morrison began practicing neurological surgery in South Florida in 1974.

He was born in Philadelphia and moved to Cleveland 16 years later. After meeting his wife in High School and graduating from college he returned to medical school at Case Western Reserve during which time he spent time at Queen’s Square in London studying neurology. While a medical student he did steroid chemistry research under NIH auspices and made and reported a new discovery. After an internship he spent two years doing NIH funded research on primates in the United States Public Health Service and then returned to University Hospitals, Cleveland Ohio for his Neurosurgical Residency.

Dr. Morrison then opened his practice of neurological surgery in South Florida by joining two well established neurosurgeons. His practice flourished and he became involved with multiple hospitals and in the institutions of his specialty. He has served as the president of the Greater Miami Neurosurgical Society, the Florida Neurosurgical Society, the Southern Neurosurgical Society, the Greater Miami Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and the Miami Medical Forum. He has served on, and chaired, multiple boards in several hospitals, but most notably Miami Children’s Hospital where he has severed as Chief of Neurosurgery, Chief of Surgery, Board of Directors, Medical Board, and most Hospital committees.

Dr. Morrison is a member of multiple neurosurgical organizations which include the Neurosurgical Society of America, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Southern Neurosurgical Society, the American Society of Pediatric Neurological Surgeons, the International Society of Pediatric Neurological Surgeons, and the American Epilepsy Society.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (and served for years as the Chief of the local applicant committee and as a Governor of the College). Dr. Morrison has been recognized by many of the “Who’s Who” organizations, including the “Who’s Who Physicians in America”, “Best Doctors in America”, and many others.

Dr. Morrison was involved in founding the Pediatric Neurosurgical Alliance between Miami Children’s Hospital and the University of Miami and joined the full time faculty where he is a Professor of Neurological Surgery of the University of Miami School of Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is the Emeritus Director of Neurological Surgery at Miami Children’s Hospital and is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Morrison has published numerous articles on various aspects of the neurosciences. His book chapters have been directed toward the treatment of epilepsy in children as have a number of his presentations. The latter include talks on brain tumors, spasticity, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, and most entities involving the nervous system. He has made a large number of oral, as well as written, presentations on various aspects of neurological disorders. He has been an editorial consultant for numerous neurosurgical publications.

Dr. Morrison continues to be committed to teaching residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, and, indeed, all medical personnel and acquaint them with the wonders of the nervous system.

Research Interests

Preclinical Mechanistic and Neuroprotection Research in Traumatic Brain Injury and Clinical trials, and Neuromonitoring Techniques in the Injured Brain. Many mechanisms of injury, and strategies for neuroprotection and repair, are common to both Severe Traumatic Brain injury, and Spinal cord injury.Cell replacement therapy, either mediated by neurotrophin augmentation of endogenous Progenitor cells, or transplantation strategies, has become an important lab focus, since the award of an RO1 entitled “Modulation of Hippocampal Neurogenesis and Cognitive recovery after neurotrauma”.This offers the prospect of enhancing recovery, in patients with residual severe neurological deficit, after TBI. New therapies, such as perfluorocarbons offer the prospect of ameliorting the neuronal death that occurs, in TBI, and Strategies for their use will be explored in animal models, and human trials.
