As Director of Education and Outreach, Dr. McMillan liaises The Miami Project's care and cure mission to a diverse audience in a variety of settings. The Miami Project's efforts span FDA indication-seeking clinical trials across virtually all clinical research settings—surgical, inpatient, outpatient, and beyond. This research in enable by engagement of stakeholders across many professional sets—government, nonprofit, for profit, and beyond. Educationally, amongst other efforts Dr. McMillan proudly direct our Henry G. Steinbrenner Scholars Program that is a 10 wk immersive, competitive, funded, research-driven summer internship to seed the future of neuroscience through the lens of neurotrauma.
As an Assistant Professor, Dr. McMillan's dissertation pertained to the role of the autonomic nervous system in the absorption, trafficking, and fates of dietary fat. He still keeps a keen eye on the neurogenic physiology of feeding and obesity, but now collaborates on various laboratory efforts in the neuroscience umbrella. Dr. McMillan also aligns some of his field efforts with regional demands and and affordances—aiming at the disproportionate risks (e.g., hurricanes and heat) and rewards (e.g., scuba and sailing) the Tropical Atlantic poses for people living with disability from paralysis.
