Seeking Patient Care?
The Breast Imaging Center of the University of Miami, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Miller School of Medicine is one of two accredited Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence in Miami-Dade County, as conferred by the Commission of Quality and Safety and the Commission of Breast Imaging of the American College of Radiology. We are the only university-based breast imaging center of South Florida, which provides unique opportunities for interaction with world renowned specialists with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer who lead diverse and cutting edge clinical trials.
Multidisciplinary breast site group participation maintains the highest academic level of care which involves the interaction between surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists and genetic counselors as well as dedicated patient coordinators.
The center consists of a group of board-certified and fellowship-trained breast dedicated radiologists with experience and training in all imaging modalities for the evaluation and detection of breast pathology. We provide screening and diagnostic examinations tailored to each patient’s particular risk factors including digital mammography, breast ultrasound and breast MRI, as well as perform image-guided biopsies and localization procedures under each of these imaging modalities in a personalized, compassionate, and caring manner. Diagnostic results are provided at the time of evaluation, by a physician to each and every patient to minimize the anxiety and discomfort of unknown results.

Breast Cancer Awareness
Breast Cancer is the second most common cancer affecting women after skin cancer, and the second leading cause of female mortality due to cancer. It is estimated that one in every eight women will develop breast cancer over the course of their lives.
Despite many technological advances, mammography is still considered the gold standard for early detection of breast cancer, and although there has been recent controversy regarding the age at which to begin screening mammography and how often to perform it, all studies have agreed that early detection not only decreases mortality by as much as 40%, but increases the number of years gained and quality of life of those patients who are diagnosed with this disease. Early detection leads to more conservative and less aggressive treatment. For more information please visit Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and download the Breast Cancer Recommendations brochure.
Because of this, multiple organizations such as the American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology, Society of Breast Imaging, and the Susan G. Komen foundation have energetically made the following recommendations for screening, which we at the University of Miami also endorse:
- Baseline mammogram at the age of 40
- Yearly mammogram thereafter
