Clinical Training

Clinical training involves inpatient consultations and outpatient clinics at UHealth Tower, Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Teaching is provided through a variety of clinical activities and several weekly conferences.

The University of Miami medical complex is one of the nation’s largest medical centers, providing care to a large number of indigent and referral patients. Both inpatient and outpatient selective rotations are scheduled in the University of Miami Crohn’s and Colitis Center, the Motility Lab, advanced endoscopy, nutrition, pancreas/small bowel, and all of the general gastroenterology clinics.

Research Training

The program provides a variety of basic science and clinical research opportunities. Faculty on campus are currently involved in clinical and basic research in a wide spectrum of gastroenterology diseases, with special emphases on inflammatory bowel disease (innate immunity, molecular biology, autoimmunity, animal models) motility lab, hepatology, biliary endoscopy, and pancreas/small bowel projects.

Fellows participate in clinical or basic science research projects under the supervision of members of the faculty. There are campus-wide opportunities amongst the faculty at the Miller School and former fellows have collaborated with faculty from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Division of Hepatology, Division of Microbiology and Immunology, Department of Public Health, and many others.

T32 Research Training Grant

Under the direction of Dr. Maria Abreu, the Miller School's Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology T32 Program provides applicants with systematic, multidisciplinary postdoctoral research training in translational gastroenterology and hepatology. The program will provide training in three thematic areas including: inflammation, regeneration, and health care disparities. Core faculty from across the Miller School campus provide mentorship for this unique opportunity. Fellows in their 2nd or 3rd year can participate in either a basic/translational science research track or health disparities/clinical outcomes track.
