The University of Miami Miler School of Medicine has been a leader in addressing the unique dermatologic concerns in skin of color. In 2002, the Miller School was one of the first dermatology departments in the country to appoint a faculty member who is dedicated to the research and treatment of common dermatologic diseases in skin of color.

Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd was appointed the Director of Ethnic Skincare with a focus on both medical and cosmetic dermatology. Since then the division has grown to include Dr. Shasa Hu, who secured a prestigious NIH grant to study melanoma in black and Latino patients. Dr. Hu also specializes in cosmetic dermatology and has unique expertise in cosmetic procedures in the skin of color population. In 2021, Dr. Danyelle Dawes was added as the first part-time physician of the newly renamed Skin of Color Division. Her expertise includes general dermatology, surgical dermatology, cosmetics and ethnic skin care.

The Skin of Color Division is a comprehensive group of both full-time and part-time faculty with highly skilled expertise in addressing both medical and cosmetic dermatology concerns in skin of color.
