Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. HS often affects patients starting in puberty and may last through the lifespan into adulthood. In many cases, HS can be severe and derails the patients' life plans, often, at the prime time of their lives. HS is common, often underdiagnosed, and results in devastating morbidity, disproportionate mortality, and a significant healthcare system burden. HS disproportionally affects females however, it is often diagnosed in men. Investigating the mechanisms of HS etiology and novel treatment options for HS requires a dedicated team of clinicians and scientists working together, with a united mission to advance the care for patients suffering from HS. To make a difference in HS, both clinically and in research, a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and investigators are needed. Clinicians and scientists at the University of Miami have emerged as leaders in HS research and treatment of HS in areas of medical dermatology, wound healing, and surgery.
Therefore, the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami has founded the Miami Hidradenitis Suppurativa Center (MHSC) with the following mission: to advance the care and state-of-the-art research of HS. To achieve its mission, the Center leverages the basic and translational expertise of the Department in wound healing, inflammatory and infectious skin diseases, molecular pathology, and cutting-edge scientific expertise that exist in the Department. Additionally, the MHSC welcomes the collaboration of may experts at the U in fields such as surgery, gynecology, hospital medicine and more.
