The Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group (OSIG) serves to provide University of Miami medical students with opportunities to learn about the field of orthopaedics. We host numerous events each year with residents and faculty to provide students exposure to the field of Orthopaedic Surgery. In addition, we provide students with student, resident, and faculty mentors to help them navigate the field and application process. Finally, we attempt to facilitate research opportunities, matching students with residents and faculty for various projects.
OSIG Events
OSIG events are announced via email and facebook.
- What is Orthopaedic Surgery and How to Succeed in Medical School? A talk aimed at MS1s presented by faculty adviser Amiethab Aiyer.

What is Orthopaedic Surgery?
Orthopaedic Surgery is essentially surgery as it pertains to the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
Orthopaedic Surgery Residency & Fellowship
Orthopaedic Surgery residency is a comprehensive five-year training program, including an intern year in surgery. The majority of residents complete a fellowship in one of the following subspecialties:
- Hand surgery
- Shoulder and elbow surgery
- Total joint reconstruction (arthroplasty)
- Pediatric orthopaedics
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Spine surgery
- Musculoskeletal oncology
- Orthopedic sports medicine
- Orthopaedic trauma
Shadowing Opportunities
The UM Department of Orthopaedics welcomes medical students who wish to shadow. This includes clinical, research and operating room shadowing opportunities. Please contact an OSIG officer for information about taking trauma call and shadowing residents and attendings.
Grand Rounds
These events provide the opportunity to hear presentations from physicians and residents, both from within our institution and some visiting from other elsewhere. These events are announced via email and are open to all medical students.
