We may only accept for externships students who are registered and are in good standing at LCME approved medical schools. LCME medical schools are licensed and accredited medical schools in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
The Miller School of Medicine participates in the AAMC’s Visiting Student Learning Opportunities Website (VSLO). Medical students who wish to perform a rotation in our department must apply through VSLO. Please visit the Miller School's information page on the VSLO web site for our school’s application requirements.
In addition to the school’s requirements, you must also provide us with a copy of your USMLE score(s) and a Letter of Recommendation (does not need to be done by an Orthopaedic Surgeon). These must be uploaded to the supplemental documents section. We also require students to upload a memo stating whether they are applying to our residency program or not and why they would like to rotate at the University of Miami.
No elective will be approved until all the paperwork has been submitted.
If you are planning to apply to our orthopaedic residency program, it is suggested that you schedule your rotation between August and December. All rotations will be for 4-week periods and must start on a Monday. Students should choose two different two week consecutive electives.
Every away rotator will be formally interviewed for our Orthopaedic Surgery residency program during their away rotation at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Typically, interviews will consist of a faculty interview, a resident interview, and a program directing interview.
