Junior Membership

This level of membership is open to all faculty who have been with the school for a minimum period of two years, with a primary full-time or part-time appointment in the Miller School of Medicine, as defined by the UM Faculty manual. Junior members will generally have a track record of teaching and may have early leadership roles (e.g., course or clerkship director, associate fellowship director, assistant education dean).

Senior Membership

An initial group of faculty members will be appointed to the senior member level based on their track record of leadership and excellence in teaching and/or other educator roles. However, in order to qualify for advancement from the Junior to the Senior level, faculty will need to meet a minimum set of criteria:

  1. Must be an Associate Professor
  2. Successfully completed at least one term as a junior member
  3. Demonstrate a sustained commitment to medical education through their role as an instructor or course director in UME or GME or other education leadership, or through their contributions on education-related committees and engagement in service-related activities.
  4. Must have a strong record of scholarly publications and/or mentoring in medical education.
  5. Must be willing to commit to membership for at least 3 years and to an active mentoring role with Junior members

Member Expectations

Members are expected to actively participate in AMES programs such as the monthly workshops and journal clubs, grand rounds, and medical education symposium and research day. They are also expected to provide an annual report of their progress

Junior Member

  1. Scholarly Project(s). Junior AMES members will carry out at least one scholarly project throughout their tenure. The full project proposal must be submitted to the Membership Committee during the first year and approved before implementation.
  2. Monthly AMES Meetings. Junior AMES members are expected to attend 60% of monthly AMES meetings. In addition, they will present their scholarly project progress with their mentor (Senior AMES member) at least once per year.
  3. Participation in Professional Development Activities. Junior AMES members are expected to actively participate in medical education journal club, grand rounds, and other professional development workshops and activities offered by AMES.
  4. Committee Participation. All Junior AMES members are expected to be part of at least one of the AMES committees to ensure the smooth functioning of all AMES activities.
  5. Medical Education Symposium and Research Day. Junior AMES members are required to attend the annual Med Ed Symposium and Research Day.
  6. Annual Progress Report. Junior AMES members will submit an annual progress report reviewed by their mentor to the Membership Committee. This report will document participation in AMES activities and provide an update on the scholarly project and other professional development activities. It will also include a self-assessment of progress made as an AMES scholar and set clear goals for the upcoming year.

Senior Member

  1. Mentorship. Senior AMES members are required to mentor a junior AMES member and are encouraged to participate in mentorship skill development, in particular providing support for their scholarly research project.
  2. Monthly AMES Meetings. Senior AMES members are required to attend 60% of monthly AMES meetings. In addition, they are required to assist their mentee (Junior AMES member) in preparing a presentation on their scholarly project progress at least once per year.
  3. Committee participation. All Senior AMES members are expected to be part of one of the AMES committees to ensure the smooth functioning of all AMES activities.
  4. Med Ed Symposium and Research Day. Senior AMES members are expected to attend the annual Med Ed Symposium and Research Day, and guide their mentees in the presentation of their work.
  5. Annual Summary Report. Senior members are required to complete a summary of their mentoring activities with their junior members.
