Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Pediatric rehabilitation medicine (PRM) uses an interdisciplinary approach to address the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of congenital and childhood-onset physical impairments.

The conditions commonly seen include:

  • cerebral palsy
  • traumatic and nontraumatic brain injuries
  • spina bifida
  • spinal cord injuries
  • birth brachial plexus
  • torticollis, limb deficiencies
  • pediatric burns
  • a myriad of congenital/genetic disabilities and neuromuscular conditions

The pediatric physiatrist is recognized as the essential physician expert for children and youth with acquired and congenital disabilities with the main purpose of optimizing function and life transitions across the care continuum and into the community.

Pediatric inpatient rehabilitation includes consults throughout Holtz Children’s Hospital as well as an inpatient rehabilitation unit that is provided by a comprehensive multidisciplinary team of physiatrists, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, psychologists, and rehabilitation nurses associated with our CARF-accredited Lynn Rehabilitation Center.

The PRM outpatient clinics help address rehabilitation needs of patients with functional impairments affecting development, activities of daily living, and mobility via medications, injections, referrals for therapies, and prescriptions for bracing, durable medical equipment, and assistive technology.
