Program Information
Our mission is to improve function, mobility, independence, activity level and quality of life in cancer patients from the time of diagnosis, through survivorship, and at the end of life. The Cancer Rehabilitation Fellow will gain expertise diagnosing and treating functional impairments associated with cancer and its treatment(s). S/he will also learn to identify patients at risk of functional decline and how to optimize their function prior to oncology treatment(s). Thanks to incredible breakthroughs in the field of cancer treatment, there has been a significant increase in the number of survivors. Cancers survivors have a unique set of physical, psychosocial and functional needs with tremendous potential for longitudinal recovery. Cancer rehabilitation physicians have the expertise and training to address these deficits and promote functional restoration. To that end, the field of cancer rehabilitation is a burgeoning area of growth in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (MSOM), and Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center (CLRC)– Jackson Health System (JHS) collectively are in a great position to further advance the field of Cancer Rehabilitation Medicine and educate future generations.
