Goals

  1. To provide opportunity for the trainee to learn the relevant biochemistry, physiology and physiopathology of the endocrine system and thus of endocrine disease.
  2. To learn the fundamental information as well as the practical steps to be taken for the diagnosis and management of endocrine disease.
  3. To become proficient in the techniques required of a consultant in this field.
  4. To develop progressively the clinical skills expected of a consultant in endocrinology.
  5. To become skilled and experienced in ethical, cost-effective endocrine practice.
  6. To maintain empathy respect and concern for their patients’ physical, psychological, and emotional comfort.
  7. To be able to evaluate critically published material relevant to endocrinology.
  8. To be exposed, through participation to, clinical and basic research, and the presentation of data and their interpretation.

Objectives

  1. Training in the diagnosis and management of endocrine disease, emphasizing history and physical exam pertinent to endocrine disorders and diabetes.
  2. Selection and interpretation of endocrine tests and imaging procedures including laboratory testing, dynamic endocrine testing, ultra-sonography, radionuclide scans, DEXA, computerized axial, and positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance.
  3. Achieving instructor level expertise and competency in procedures including fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid gland, management of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems.
  4. Understanding the pharmaco-therapy of endocrine disease and the role of surgery, radiation and the use of radioisotopes.
