Fellows receive intense exposure to a vast array of rare and common metabolic bone diseases while rotating with clinical bone specialists at our various sites. At the University of Miami, fellows attend the metabolic bone disease outpatient clinics.

At the Miami VA Healthcare Center, fellows are instructed on how to properly analyze bone density tests from start to finish. By the end of the bone rotation, fellows should be able to independently read bone densities. They also receive instruction on trabecular bone score, vertebral fracture analysis, and body composition.

During a designated month, fellows receive a series of core bone lectures, including several lectures geared towards bone board prep. There are opportunities for fellows to present bone cases at the Rare Bone Disease Echo Program, where rare bone disease experts gather to collaborate and discuss difficult cases. Fellows have the opportunity to present results of their bone research as well as interesting clinical bone cases at the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Fellows also rotate through the Fracture Liaison Service, where they are exposed to inpatients admitted with fractures and osteoporosis. There are ongoing research opportunities in the area of exercise and body composition, as well as quality improvement projects fracture prevention.
