Diabetes Research Institute

A World Leader in Diabetes Cure-Focused Research

Founded in 1971 by a group of parents of children with diabetes who were committed to finding a cure for this devastating disease, the Diabetes Research Institute leads the world in cure-focused research. As the largest and most comprehensive research center dedicated to curing diabetes, the DRI is aggressively working to develop a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and normalizing blood sugar levels without imposing other risks. Since its inception, the DRI has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes, pioneering many of the techniques used in diabetes centers around the world. Having already shown that diabetes can be reversed through islet transplantation, the DRI is building upon these promising outcomes by developing the DRI BioHub, a bio engineered “mini organ” that mimics the native pancreas, containing thousands of insulin-producing cells that sense blood sugar and release the precise amount of insulin needed, in real time. Our fellows have direct access to emerging technology and the opportunity to interact and work closely with many researchers and faculty dedicated to finding a cure for Diabetes.

Comprehensive Diabetes Center

Comprehensive Diabetes Center (CDC) at the University of Miami provides a world class clinical care to patients with diabetes at two locations, the Lennar Foundation Medical Center and the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). Our mission is to provide the most advanced and comprehensive care to all patients with diabetes applying the latest discoveries in the treatment and cure of this disease.

  • Personalized care: We design a personalized care for every patient that fits the individual’s clinical profile and takes into account their social, cultural and economic status. Our goal is improving the quality of life so that diabetes is not a burden on the patient’s everyday life.
  • Multispecialty approach: We have multiple specialties (including endocrinology, cardiology, nephrology, podiatry, neurology, sleep medicine and nutrition) as part of the comprehensive diabetes center. These specialists get involved in the care of a patient depending on their needs. Multispecialty approach improves communication between providers, avoids multiple trips to clinics and improves outcomes.
  • Patient friendly, convenient and pleasant environment: Our focus is providing an excellent patient experience in a friendly and pleasant environment. Patients often feel happy after their visit to our clinics.
  • Use of latest technologies: All our physicians are faculty members of the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. Being part of a major academic center, CDC providers are always up to date with the latest developments in the diabetes field and incorporate new technologies early into their practice.

ADA certified Education for diabetes: CDC has received ADA certification for diabetes education. This means our patient education program complies with the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support, which are endorsed by the American Diabetes Association.
