Our fellowship program prides itself in its commitment to training the next generation of leaders in the exciting field of endocrinology by working as a team to tailor individualized training that supports our fellows to fulfill their full potential to graduate as skilled clinicians, scholars and educators.

The program provides a sophisticated curriculum which is continuously updated and developed to deliver state-of-the art training to fellows. In recent years the curriculum has been updated to include training and expertise in quality improvement, patient safety, health care disparities, physician and learner wellness and interprofessional teamwork.

Clinical education is provided by faculty in clinics and on inpatient consult rounds. Our training sites offer a diverse patient population and exposure to the full breadth and depth of clinical endocrinology. Our faculty are from equally diverse backgrounds, many who have been recruited from similarly large top-notch national and international academic endocrinology programs. Our program emphasizes commitment to diversity, humanitarianism, collaborative teamwork and physician wellness. While we are one of the larger medical campuses and endocrinology training programs in the U.S., we are proud to provide a “small program” closeness in our group due to our supportive environment and the personal dedication of our teaching faculty.

The fellowship program has numerous educational conferences for fellows including a weekly core-curriculum didactic lecture given by a faculty member, an endocrine fellows’ journal club, weekly endocrine fellows’ clinical case conference, multi-disciplinary tumor board conferences, research conference and divisional and departmental grand rounds. Fellows also participate in board review and in an annual summer introductory conference series, similar to an “endocrine fellow boot camp” aimed at preparing our fellows to “hit the ground running” the beginning of each academic year. We perform an intake assessment of our starting fellows to assess each individual’s unique areas of interest, and strengths as well as to identify areas that may need improvement. Program faculty and fellows work together to design a learning plan and monitor their progress. As a result, the 5-year rolling ABIM Endocrinology board exam pass rate for graduates of our training program in recent years has been 100%.

Endocrinology fellows also are active teachers themselves, teaching endocrinology to medical students and residents, not only on rounds, but also in the classroom.

Research

Fellows are required to participate in scholarly activities during their fellowship including research and quality improvement projects. In the first year of fellowship trainees are provided with guidance in obtaining a research mentor and are required to identify their mentor and to define their research project. A substantial portion of the second year of our fellowship training program is dedicated to research training. Fellows are encouraged to present their work at national or international conferences and their work has resulted in several publications in recent years.
