Domestic Observership
In keeping with its commitment to introduce students to the field of medicine and neurosurgery, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has established a Shadowship/Observership Program in neurosurgery. This program is open to qualified students who are over 18 years of age and are currently enrolled in their undergraduate studies (preferably in pre-med, neuroscience or related field) who wish to visit the university and its affiliated hospitals for a maximum of 90 days to observe/shadow the educational and clinical activities of the department.
To qualify for a Domestic Observership in Neurosurgery, you must be either invited or pre-approved by a faculty member in our department of neurosurgery. They may observe on patient rounds, clinics, operating rooms, and follow residents and attending physicians. They may attend departmental educational conferences. Observer status means that visitors may not have any direct patient contact or be responsible in any measure for patient care. To obtain a copy of the application and prerequisites, please email a copy of your resume to the Neurosurgery Educational Office.
Medical Students
Medical students enrolled in an LCME-accredited school, should apply for a 4-week credit rotation (or sub-internship) via VSAS. To obtain additional information please email the Neurosurgery Educational Office. Observerships last a maximum of 90 days.
Neurosurgery Residents and Neurosurgery Faculty
International neurosurgery residents and neurosurgery faculty enrolled in an international university should apply for an Observership via the Department of Neurological Surgery for a maximum of 90 days.
You must be either invited or pre-approved by a faculty member in our department of neurosurgery. Interested candidates may apply by sending an email to the faculty they will like to shadow, along with a copy of their Curriculum Vitae to the Neurosurgery Educational Office. -
International Observerships
International Faculty, Residents & Medical Students
In keeping with its commitment to global exchange, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has established the Observership Program. This program is open to qualified foreign nationals who wish to visit the university and its affiliated hospitals for a maximum of 90 days to observe the activities of a department.
To qualify for an International Observership in neurosurgery, you must be currently enrolled as a resident in a neurological surgery training program at a non-LCME accredited university, or have been invited by a faculty member in our department as a Visiting Scholar of Neurosurgery.
Observer status means that visitors may not have any direct patient contact or be responsible in any measure for patient care. They may observe on rounds, follow resident and attending physicians and may participate in departmental conferences.
International Medical Students who are interested in observing the clinical activities of the Department of Neurosurgery, may be accepted for a one month rotation in our Neurosurgery Department via The William Harrington Program for Latin America or via the Global Observership Program.

The Department of Neurosurgery - UM NRS Observership Program does not have, under any circumstances, access to your credit card information. Your credit card information is used to process your observership fee payment and will not be used for any other purposes. Credit card information is transmitted through, but is not stored, on a web-enabled server. Please be aware your credit card will be billed from our third-party service provider Touchnet. All fees will appear on your receipt with the text description beginning “UM NRS Observership.”
