Clinical Fellowship Programs

Under the direction of Adib Abla, M.D.

Provides a one-year fellowship with Adib Abla, M.D., Eric C. Peterson M.D. and Robert M. Starke, M.D. in the surgical management of neurovascular disorders and complex skull base tumors. Clinical experience includes exposure to entire spectrum (bypasses, aneurysms, AVMs, endonasal endoscopy, traditional open skull base, and others). May be combined with an additional two-year endovascular fellowship. Opportunities for clinical research are available.

Under the direction of Eric C. Peterson M.D.

Provides a one-to-two-year combined fellowship under Co-Directors Eric C. Peterson M.D., Robert M. Starke, M.D., Adib Abla, M.D., and Dileep R. Yavagal, M.D. in the endovascular intervention and management of cerebrovascular disorders. We provide a large volume of cases involving vascular, tumor, stroke, and pediatric pathologies. Opportunities for clinical research are also available.

Under the direction of Ashish Shah, M.D.

Provides a one-year multidisciplinary fellowship under the direction of Ashish Shah, M.D., and Ricardo Komotar, M.D., in the area of surgical neuro-oncology and advanced training in the treatment of primary and metastatic brain and spinal cord tumors. Clinical experience will include both open surgery and radiosurgery. The fellow also will gain experience in related disciplines. There are daily neuroradiology rounds and weekly combined tumor board conferences with neurology, radiation therapy, and neuropathology. Research opportunities are strongly encouraged involving clinical trials, prospective and retrospective database review, as well as translational basic science projects within Sylvester's Brain Tumor Initiative.

Under the direction of Jonathan J. Jagid, M.D.

Provides a one-year fellowship under the direction of Jonathan R. Jagid, M.D. and Joacir Graciolli Cordeiro, M.D. in the management of neurotrauma, and neurocritical care, as applied to Trauma. Over 250 trauma craniotomies per year. Opportunities for clinical research and lab studies in neuroprotection, spinal cord injury, and stem cell biology are available.

Under the direction of Allan Levi, M.D., Ph.D. and co-directed by Ian Cote, M.D.

Peripheral nerve surgery (PNS) is that subspecialty of neurosurgery that deals with the evaluation and medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the peripheral nerve. It includes, but is not limited to, the evaluation and medical and surgical treatment of patients with traumatic nerve injuries, entrapment neuropathies (e.g., CTS, cubital tunnel syndrome, etc.) and mass lesions associated with peripheral nerves (e.g., tumors and cysts). PNS also includes distinguishing surgically treatable peripheral nerve problems from primary peripheral neuropathies and those secondary to systemic diseases such as diabetes.

Under the direction of Carolina Benjmain, M.D. and co-directed by Michael Ivan, M.D.

Provides an intensive 12-month educational experience in Skull Base Neurosurgery, complementing neurosurgery residency training. The program focuses on a comprehensive exposure to clinical evaluation, patient selection for operative and non-operative management, and active participation in diverse skull base surgical and radiation procedures. Fellows will gain progressive responsibility in patient management, developing both knowledge and manual skills. The structured program includes organized and supervised experiences in patient care, diagnostics, and the integration of therapeutic modalities. A portion of the fellowship involves outpatient clinic training for preoperative, peri-operative, and postoperative care. Research, scholarly activities, and contributions to neurosurgery education are integral, and fellows actively engage in clinical, anatomic, and neuroscience research.

Under the direction of Michael Y. Wang, M.D.

Provides training for one-year learning advanced techniques in spinal surgery including minimally invasive, spinal deformity, trauma, degenerative and tumors. More than 2,000 spinal cases are performed annually. The spine fellowship trainees work closely with Michael Y. Wang, M.D., Allan D. Levi, M.D., Ph.D., Timur Urakov, M.D., Barth A. Green, M.D., Ian Cote, M.D., Shelby Burks, Gregory Basil and Michael Monterey, M.D.

Research opportunities are available in both clinical and basic sciences within the laboratories of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.

Under the direction of Jonathan J. Jagid, M.D.

Stereotactic and Functional neurosurgery (SFNS) is that subspecialty of neurosurgery which is concerned with stereotactic and physiological techniques, including framed and frameless stereotactic systems, stereotactic radiosurgery, electrical recording, and electrical stimulation for localization and treatment of target structures in the central and peripheral nervous system (Stereotactic neurosurgery) and the surgical alteration of the nervous system (either by ablation or augmentation) to treat neurological diseases such as movement disorders, epilepsy, chronic pain, degenerative diseases, neurological injuries, and psychiatric disorders (Functional neurosurgery). Opportunities for clinical research are also available.

Under the direction of Toba Niazi, M.D. (Nicklaus Children’s Hospital)

This is a one-year clinical fellowship which includes extensive exposure to all major areas of pediatric neurosurgery. The Fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships and qualifies otherwise eligible applicants to pursue certification by the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery (ABPNS). Our faculty, Toba Niazi, M.D., John Ragheb, M.D., Sarah Jernigan, M.D., and Heather J. McCrea, M.D., Ph.D., are all fellowship-trained and board-certified by both the ABNS and the ABPNS. Kristen Stabingas, M.D. is board eligible by both the ABNS and the ABPNS. NCH has perhaps the largest national experience in the surgical treatment of epilepsy in young children and is one of the busiest referral centers in the country for pediatric brain tumors. NCH also boasts widely recognized surgical programs for craniosynostosis, craniofacial syndromes, spasticity, and spina bifida.
