Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has an active research enterprise comprised of both clinical and basic science research. Faculty and staff are engaged in projects related to depression and bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, HIV/AIDS, aging, schizophrenia, neuroscience, cancer, children and adolescents, substance abuse, medication adherence, memory and cognition, genomics and much more. 

The department boasts four centers, each conducting groundbreaking research in a myriad of subject areas. The Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and Aging also home to the renowned state-funded Memory Disorders Clinic; the Center for Therapeutic Innovation is the hub for basic science research and drug discovery/development; the UHealth Tourette Center of Excellence, known for its collaborative approach to both clinical and research programs addressing Tourette’s Disorder, tics and related problems; and the Center for HIV and Research in Mental Health (CHARM), which offers expertise, infrastructure and resources necessary to strengthen mental health-related HIV prevention and care research.

Our new Research Track provides didactics with broad exposure to our research faculty for six months, followed by opportunities to work with a mentor on a research elective in the third or fourth year of training.
