Jackson Memorial Hospital is an accredited, non-profit, tertiary care hospital and the major teaching facility for the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. With more than 1,550 licensed beds, Jackson Memorial Hospital is a referral center, a magnet for medical research, and home to Ryder Trauma Center – the only adult and pediatric Level 1 trauma center in Miami-Dade County.
The primary training facility for the Department of Psychiatry is Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital (JBHH), a three-story, 180,000-square-foot facility that provides a full continuum of care for the entire family through evaluation, clinical treatment, and teaching & research. Within JBHH, the Health & Recovery Center offers a Chemical Dependency/Detoxification Program for the safe withdrawal from alcohol or drug addiction. Dual Diagnosis Services are available for adult men and women who have both an acute psychiatric illness and a substance abuse disorder. The full continuum of care for children includes an Inpatient Child and Adolescent Unit, a program for severely emotionally disturbed (SED) children and an outpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinic (CAP).
Residents also rotate through the Bruce W. Carter Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). The VAMC Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences provides rich training opportunities for Psychiatry residents and fellows in diverse settings. Trainees rotate in inpatient and outpatient services, as well as specialized residential rehabilitation units for PTSD and Substance use disorders (SUD). Elective rotations in specialized outpatient programs (including PTSD, SUD, Geriatric Psychiatry, Primary Care-MH integration, Intensive Community Case Management, LGBTQ and transgender services to name a few) are available in senior years. Opportunities for engaging in educational and research activities abound.
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Health Tower, Bruce W. Carter Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mailman Center for Child Development, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and Ryder Trauma Center are all located on the same medical center campus. Due to the variety of medical and ancillary services offered and the large number of training programs, it is possible for the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center offers one of the broadest spectrums of technical and professional medical services. Many of these, by their very nature, cannot be duplicated by the average community hospital because of the physical facility requirements as well as the need for a very high level of professional staff and appropriate financial resources.
All patients are available for teaching purposes. Approximately 40% of the patients admitted to this hospital are private patients and the remainder are staff patients. All patients are cared for under the supervision of Jackson Memorial Hospital’s medical staff, most of whom also hold appointments at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. Currently the medical staff consists of over 1,300 physicians, almost half of whom are full-time. The medical staff is appointed by the Public Health Trust. It should be noted that, for the purposes of broadening the range of experiences available to resident physicians, the Chiefs of Service and Division Chiefs with the Veterans Administration Hospital and several private hospitals and clinics hold faculty appointments at the School of Medicine by virtue of our affiliation agreements.
