Requirements
Eligible applicants for the Psychiatry Residency Training at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System Program (ACGME ID# 4001121051) must be graduates of a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or of an international medical school listed by the World Health Organization published World Directory of Medical Schools.
International Medical Graduates
International Medical Graduates must have a current, valid certificate from the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or have a full-unrestricted license to practice medicine in an US licensing jurisdiction. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school are also eligible. Jackson Health System offers J-1 Visa sponsorship for entering residents.
To Apply
Applications for PGY-1 positions are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Your ERAS application requires a personal statement, medical school transcript, USMLE scores for Steps 1 and 2, three letters of reference, and the MSPE. It is preferred to have your Step 2 completed, with scores available for review, by February 1st as documentation of successful completion of the USMLE Step 1, Step II CK and Step 2 CS must be submitted for initial appointment as a resident.
For all level applicants, our selection committee pays close attention to the following:
- Documentation of excellent academic records and medical school performance
- Scores on USMLE Step 1 and 2 of over 210 (or COMLEX equivalent)
- One full year of clinical experience in a US hospital is strongly recommended for International Medical Graduates
- Applicants who demonstrate an interest in the field of Psychiatry through research, publications, volunteer work, Mental Health advocacy, etc.
- Applicants must not have been dismissed from a previous residency program.
- Years since medical school graduation will be closely examined.
Resident Selection Policy
A selection committee consisting of the Program Director, Associate Program Directors, Fellowship Directors and Chief Residents will review all applicants, select applicants for interview, participate in the interview process and rank the applicants submitted in the NRMP match.
Applicants will be selected based on residency program-related criteria including preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. Selection will not be based on sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, ethnicity, disability, or veteran status.
The selection committee invites approximately 120 candidates for individual interviews per year. Applicants will be notified of their selection for interview by email and will be set up with an interview day.
