Seeking Patient Care?
Researchers interested in exercise and nutrition science study how exercise and increased physical activity and dietary interventions influence health, disease, function, and quality of life. Our research specifically focuses on the cardioendocrine, energy metabolism, body composition, and nutritional implications of the secondary complications that occur following an injury and/or disease.
We emphasize the role of lifestyle interventions, such as diet and exercise, and their influence on energy expenditure, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, and functional outcomes. Our research facilities include:
- Body composition assessment using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), air-displacement plethysmography (Bod Pod), bioelectrical impendence analysis (BIA), and anthropometrics (skinfolds, girths).
- Resting and exercise energy metabolism assessment using various metabolic carts (ParvoMedics TrueOne 2400, COSMED K-5 portable and COSMED Quark RMR) and ActiGraph monitors
- Pulmonary function testing using COSMED Quark PFT
- Dietary assessment conducted by a registered dietitian, and using Nutrition Data System for Research
- Strength testing using Biodex System
