Sports Neurology and Traumatic Brain Injury

General Neurology Division

Sports Neurology is a relatively new subspecialty of neurology that focuses on the evaluation, treatment, and management of sports-related neurologic injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (TBI) sustained during athletic activities.

Sports Neurology also addresses the safe participation in sports for individuals with pre-existing neurologic conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and migraine. In addition, Sports Neurology explores the positive neurologic effects of physical activity, recognizing the potential for exercise and athletic participation to enhance normal brain function and potentially delay the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

While a concussion is the most recognized sports-related neurologic injury, athletes may also sustain injuries involving the spinal cord, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular system, and, in rare cases, more severe forms of traumatic brain injury.
