About Us

Family Medicine and Community Health
Established in 1965, the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health was the first academic family medicine department in the United States. Our department was started by Lynn P. Carmichael, M.D., considered one of the founders of the discipline of family medicine in the United States. One year later, the department set another precedent when it established the first Family Practice Training Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Our academic department is located on the campus of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, South Florida’s premiere research and patient care facility. Our department is well known and respected for its history of community service. One of our important missions is to improve access for our patients and improve the effectiveness of primary medical care throughout our Miami-Dade community.

As part of the culturally diverse community in South Florida, our department focuses on multiculturalism, language, and human behavior skills, in order to train physicians to understand the difficulties and complexities of working with diverse populations.

Education is another of the department’s primary missions. Our faculty members work diligently to prepare the next generation of physicians to become caring family doctors, committed to the well being of patients, their families, and the community at large. Our family medicine residency program provides broad-based and comprehensive medical education essential for family physicians in training.

Our department also offers international family medicine education opportunities in Haiti and post-residency fellowship opportunities in geriatrics, sports medicine, and hospice and palliative medicine. Our faculty development programs provide academic and professional leadership skills to physicians in the community.
