In 1971, the federal government created Area Health Education Center (AHEC) as an academic-community partnership to “improve the supply, distribution, diversity and quality of the healthcare workforce.” University of Miami AHEC Program was started in 1985 at the Department of Family Medicine and is part of the Florida Statewide AHEC Consortium comprising of 4 other State Universities.

The Florida Statewide AHEC Consortium seeks to reduce health disparities across the state by increasing the diversity of the health care workforce, by providing interdisciplinary training opportunities for health professions students and clinicians and by enhancing the skills of practicing health professionals through continuing education.

  • We inspire and train a diverse and broad range of health professionals to practice in underserved and vulnerable communities.
  • Major funding is provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in the US Department of Health and Human Services.
  • In 2007 State Department of Health, Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida awarded Tobacco Training and Cessation grant to all 5 State AHEC Programs.
  • The program has served over 220,000 tobacco users and over 170,000 current and future healthcare providers have been trained to address tobacco addiction with their patients.
