Family Medicine and Community Health

Established in 1965, the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health was the first academic family medicine department in the United States. Our department was started by Lynn P. Carmichael, M.D., considered one of the founders of the discipline of family medicine in the United States. One year later, the department set another precedent when it established the first Family Practice Training Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

“The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade; a calling, not a business; a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head. Often the best part of your work will have nothing to do with potions and powders, but with the exercise of an influence of the strong upon the weak, of the righteous upon the wicked, of the wise upon the foolish.”
