Nail Melanoma: What You Need to Know

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer, but when it is found early, it is highly treatable and often curable. While many people think of melanoma as something that appears on the skin, it can also develop under the nails. This is called nail melanoma, also known as acral lentiginous melanoma.

Nail melanoma can affect anyone, but it is more common in people with darker skin tones, especially those of African American, Asian, and Native American descent.

Because it often goes unnoticed, knowing the warning signs is especially important.

You should see a dermatologist if you notice:

  1. A dark streak running down a nail
  2. A nail that becomes completely brown or black
  3. A pink or red growth under the nail
  4. A nail that splits or bleeds without a clear injury
