We are a group of students at the University of Miami Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduate Student Government (BMBGSG) that seek to create opportunities for BMB students to learn and explore career options, professional networking, and enhance their scientific credentials.
The committee strives to positively affect the professional development of BMB students to provide a solid foundation for any path taken after graduation. The Committee Chair will lead meetings to develop plans for workshops and panels and encourages its members to help BMBGSG attain its goals through promoting educational events and opportunities.
What We Do
Our committee plans events and activities that help to build a strong connection between current PhD students with alumni and professionals, as well as increase the graduate students’ readiness for the career world. Here are some of the other planned activities under our committee.
Alumni Career Panels
As career options are vast and interests vary, the committees plan is to survey graduate students in BMB to find career interests and design various workshops and information sessions from alumni professionals in the field.
Plan and develop an engaging seminar series where students can learn about post-graduate school job opportunities and what skills are needed to excel in their chosen career path from alumni that have been in their shoes. Seminars can also be used to introduce niche and/or unfamiliar careers in STEM.
Career Development & Recruitment
Research and recommend potential internships and on/off-campus trainings in a particular field or technique. The committee can relay opportunities to expand into the research community and provide guidance in terms of applications, approaching UM and non-UM travel grants, as well as CV revisions.
Assist the BMB department and business office with student recruitment and orientation events each semester. Committee members can serve as student liaisons for prospective and incoming new graduate students.
Graduate Student Development Workshops
Implement educational meetings on how to prepare and write grants (i.e., F31 fellowships or other manuscripts), and respond to reviewer comments.
Organize student meetups to practice oral presentation skills with fellow peers for qualifying exams, defenses, research updates, and more.
Advertise and organize skills workshops that are desirable in the STEM workforce, including resume-building, introductory bioinformatics and coding language courses, and interview etiquette.
The committee can also provide a resource for manuscript editing upon requests with sufficient notice and committee availability.
