Vacation 1

CA-1

The first year begins with a month-long introduction to the operating room. New residents spend each morning working alongside senior residents in the OR, while afternoons are packed with essential lectures and high-fidelity simulation activities. During this orientation month of duty residents do not take call. This provides substantial time for reading and academic preparation. The remainder of the year is spent strengthening these basic skills at various clinical sites including Ryder Trauma Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, labor & delivery, and anesthesiology-directed ICUs.
CA-1 Months Description
General Services & Trauma 7 Rotate through UMH, JMH Main OR, and Ryder Trauma Center. These locations provide an excellent intro level cases with opportunities to advance as you gain skills. Residents can expect to manage life-threatening pathology from the first month with appropriate support.
Trauma ICU 1 Multidisciplinary team caring for 25+ trauma/burn patients. Frequent exposure to ECMO and advanced ventilation strategies.
OB Anesthesia 2 JMH is the high-risk referral center for the region and provides services for the most complex obstetric cases.
Pre-Anesthesia Clinic 1 JMH-based clinic coordinates preop clearance for our county facilities.
Transplant Anesthesia 1 First-year residents included in the transplant rotation for outstanding exposure to line placement, invasive monitoring, and blood management. Miami Transplant Institute is one of the highest volume centers in the country.
Vacation 1 2 two-week blocks

CA-2

Residents transition to a higher level of patient care and more challenging anesthetic plans. This year focuses on learning the subspecialty rotations including pediatric, cardiothoracic, and neuroanesthesia. Throughout the year, residents also gain exposure to acute and chronic pain medicine, preoperative evaluation, and post-operative care. Residents will also have additional rotations in obstetric and critical care medicine.
CA-2 Months Description
Neuroanesthesia 2 UMH and JMH. Full spectrum of cases including spines, neurovascular, tumor, and awake craniotomies.
Pediatric Anesthesia 2 Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and Holtz Children’s Hospital provide our residents access to virtually all pediatric cases in the county. Nicklaus is a private tertiary care pediatric hospital located 15 minutes from the main campus.
Cardiac & Thoracic Anesthesia 2 Rotate through cardiac surgeries at UMH and JMH including minimally invasive cases, heart and lung transplants. Generous experience with TEE in-vivo and simulation lab.
