Neuroanesthesia Fellowship

Neuroanesthesia

Educational Goals

  • Gain extensive exposure to perioperative management within the clinical subspecialty
  • Become involved in ongoing research in Neuroanesthesiology
  • Attend at least one meeting oriented toward Neuroanesthesiology
  • Present data at a national meeting and at a departmental “Research-in-Progress” meeting
  • Be involved in the Neuroanesthesiology teaching initiatives
  • Become a highly skilled independent practitioner

Rotations

  • Neuroanesthesia (5 months)
  • Neurospine (2 month)
  • Interventional Neuroradiology (1 month),
  • Neurocritical Care (NICU) (1 month)
  • Neuromonitoring (1 month)
  • Neuroscience Research (1 month)
  • Elective (1 month)

Clinical Anesthesia

The Fellowship will provide a large variety of routine and complex neurosurgical and neuro-interventional procedures under the supervision of experienced neuro anesthesiologists. The fellow will develop competency in planning and executing an appropriate anesthetic plan that includes monitoring techniques and provides perioperative patient management.

Neurointensive Care

The fellow will master preoperative evaluation and postoperative care of neurosurgical patients and manage critically ill patients in the intensive care environment. Neurointensivists will supervise this work.

Neuromonitoring

The fellow will understand and develop competency on issues in standard and complex neuromonitoring modalities. Such monitoring includes EEG, EP, and TCD monitoring. In addition, exposure should be sought to other advanced monitoring techniques, including NIRS, PbtO2, microdialysis, SjO2, and ICP methods commonly used in the NICU.

Didactic program

At the end of the training, the fellow should be able to confidently discuss patient management issues with the other clinical care team members as well as develop an advanced understanding of related physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology.

Research

The duration of the research experience will be variable depending on a program's resources and the trainee's interest. The type of investigation will vary from a case report to participating in ongoing clinical or laboratory projects. Fellows will acquire the research skills to plan and conduct ethical and systematic research in both clinical and basic sciences for publication.
