Biography
Dr. Candice Aurelus Sternberg is a Haitian American bilingual Haitian Creole/English-speaking Board-Certified infectious diseases physician. She is also an Associate Professor at the University of Miami in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She completed her Internal Medicine training at the University of Florida-Jacksonville. She completed her fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. She has expertise in managing complex infectious disease conditions and HIV. Her research focuses on HIV prevention and treatment for vulnerable populations, including Haitians and other immigrants. Her work attempts to address gaps in HIV treatment and prevention interventions. She has completed the competitive Inter-Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Implementation Science Fellowship.
She is a recipient of pilots/supplements from the Miami CFAR and the Center for HIV and Research in Mental Health (CHARM), and a University of Miami Clinical and Translational Institute K12 award. She has also received supplements from the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. She is a translational researcher with a focus on public health.
Dr. Sternberg founded and directs the RIVE Lab, that focuses on using strategies to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations. She also established the ANSANM (Together) Working Group to boost research efforts. She conducts research studies using community-based participatory research methods. She co-directs the Miami Case Report Group. She also serves as an Associate Director for CHARM’s Community Engagement Core.
Her work has been presented nationally and internationally at venues such as Johns Hopkins University, Ohio State University, IDWeek, CROI, and Partners in Health-Haiti. She has also served as an expert on Island TV and CBS Channel 4.
In addition, she serves on the Medical Scientist Training Program and RISE Steering Committees. She has taught all levels of trainees, from observers and undergraduate students to PhD candidates and fellows. She has a strong record of mentoring and has helped mentees to complete doctoral dissertations and obtain faculty positions at major universities. -
