Seeking Patient Care?
In any resident training program, the focus must be on teaching future urologists how best to provide the highest quality of patient care. To be most effective, the faculty must cultivate both the resident’s knowledge of all urologic pathology and his or her surgical competency.
Each resident needs to be skillful at interacting meaningfully with each patient and the patient’s family, at interfacing successfully with other medical personnel, and at productively exploring research questions. During the resident’s four years of urologic training, each resident must learn to examine pertinent medical ethical questions and relevant issues of cost containment with responsible use of resources, because both have an effect on patient care. In order to achieve these goals, there must be a teaching environment shaped by open communication, close supervision, and regular evaluation.
Our training program, one of the busiest in the country, affords each resident a multi-faceted experience. Within one square mile, a trainee has exposure to a 600-bed private tertiary care hospital (UHealth Tower); one of the nation’s largest metropolitan hospitals with 1,498 beds and one of the busiest, state-of-the-art trauma centers in the country (Jackson Memorial Hospital); an active Veterans Administration Medical Center with 500 beds and a premier spinal cord unit; and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, a NCI-designated cancer center, one of only two in the state.
Largely a referral center, the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center draws a diverse patient population from Central and South America, the Caribbean, South Florida, and Northeastern “snowbirds”, as well as the Greater Miami metropolitan area. Due to this patient diversity and the uniqueness of each hospital setting, the resident receives a comprehensive training experience. The faculty, treating its adult private patients at both UHealth Tower and Jackson Memorial Hospital, generates an active private practice.
