Observership Program

• Jackson Memorial Hospital, a level 1 Trauma Center and tertiary care hospital with more than 1550 beds, is the major teaching facility for the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine

International students and physicians may be accepted as observers for clinical experiences. Observer status means that visiting students may not have any direct patient contact or be responsible in any measure for patient care. They may observe on round, follow resident and attending physicians and may participate in departmental conferences.

Housing

• Must be obtained prior to the start date of the program.
• The program does not sponsor housing or amenities. (i.e. transportation,
  meals, and lab coats.)

Attire

• Lab coats must be worn by everyone
• Men are required to have a shirt, tie and closed shoes.
• Women are required to have business attire and closed shoes.

Cost

• $500 fee for one (1) month observership
• Schedule is Monday to Friday from 8 AM - 5 PM. (No weekends)

Immunization proof of the following vaccinations must be provided in order to begin your rotations.

• Tuberculosis screening with a PPD within the last twelve months before beginning the program.
• A positive PPD should have a chest X-ray and the appropriate additional treatment. A written radiology report it required.
• Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
• Hepatitis B (three dosage vaccination, dates are required)
  
  

Health insurance coverage is mandatory and the following are the minimum requirements for Health Insurance Coverage:

• $250,000 accident and sickness medical benefits maximum.
• Deductible $250 to $500. Insurance company will pay 80% of the first $5,000 of eligible expenses, and then 100% of the remaining eligible expenses.
• Emergency Medical Evacuation - $25,000
• Return of Mortal Remains - $10,000
• Emergency dental for accidents $500
  
  

Participants in our program may purchase insurance coverage for the duration of their Observership through Patriot Travel Medical Insurance. 

Other international health insurance policies will be accepted if they fulfill the minimum requirements listed above. Please note the policy must be written in English and the amounts quoted in U.S. dollars.
