Message from the Chair

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Leslie Morse

Welcome to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. In 2003, our department was the first to be added to the medical school since its founding in 1952. Our department takes this privilege seriously, striving to provide state-of-the-art, evidenced-based care to our patients, conduct cutting-edge research, and offer innovative education for trainees. As a world-class academic medical center, we set our goals high. We realize that the impact of our discoveries, clinical care programs, and educational initiatives not only affects citizens of South Florida, but extends to the national and international community.

As we move forward, expanding our reach through the newly built Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center, UHealth Advanced Institute for Pain Management, Sylvester Cancer Center, and satellite locations, the phrase we use most often to articulate our goals in serving our patients is “optimum function.” Our patients suffer catastrophic injuries, such as those to the brain and spinal cord; pain from spinal disc herniations or arthritis; medical debility from organ failure or malignancy; or neurological loss from stroke, neurological disease, or other diseases or events. In pursuit of optimum function, our caregivers, researchers, and trainees work in concert to present alternatives to disability, treatments to reduce pain and weakness, and translational studies that can improve lives.

So, I welcome you to this website, to explore the dynamic, multi-faceted, and patient-centered field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. We are a department committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. I welcome your interest in exploring our outstanding, caring faculty, reaching out to obtain care, assisting with our mission, or joining our department in the ways that are most relevant to you.
