Interest in the retreat grew steadily in the years that followed. In 2016, DOCS transitioned CHLC to a Miami-based conference format, allowing the event to expand in scope and reach. This pivot introduced keynote speakers and interactive workshops while preserving the conference’s student-centered foundation. The new format also integrated access to local service events and health fairs, shifting engagement from the Florida Keys to sustained partnerships within the Miami community.
By 2019, CHLC had grown from its original cohort of 12 students to hosting approximately 60 medical students from institutions nationwide. The conference continued to evolve alongside its participants and communities, remaining responsive to emerging topics in community health and leadership. In its most recent iteration, CHLC welcomed 74 attendees from medical schools across the country.
Building on over a decade of student-led innovation and collaboration, the conference remains deeply inspired by the work shared by its participants and continues to serve as a national forum for connection, reflection, and action. CHLC looks forward to empowering the next generation of physician-leaders to translate ideas into impact and to advance community-driven approaches to health equity well beyond the conference weekend.
