Types of Specimens

Brain Endowment Bank

The Brain Bank distributes donated biospecimens to qualified investigators worldwide. One brain donated for research can support the work of many neuroscientists.

Our biospecimens are available in the following preparations:

  • Fresh Frozen: (2-methylbutane or dry-ice)
    • Coronal sections of brain hemisphere
    • Spinal cord segments
    • Biofluids: CSF, Plasma and Serum
    • Nucleic acids
    • Pituitary
    • Temporalis Muscle
    • Skin
  • 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin-Fixed:
    • Coronal sections of brain hemisphere
    • Spinal cord segments
    • Pituitary
    • Temporalis Muscle
    • Skin (scalp)
    • Paraffin embedded tissue blocks (FFPE)
    • FFPE Slide mounts
  • Ambient Storage
    • Hair (scalp)

Fresh snap-frozen tissues and biofluids are optimally preserved with minimal ice artifact formation. These specimens are suitable for the widest variety of clinical and research applications, including but not limited to receptor binding, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, immunoblotting, virus detection, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA & RNA Sequencing, mRNA isolation, and certain neurochemical assays.
