Qualifications
Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences or a related discipline (e.g., chemistry, engineering, physics). Although there are no prerequisites, most applicants have taken courses in general biology, cell/molecular biology, calculus, general physics, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry.
Competitive candidates will have the following:
- Excellent academic record (minimum overall cumulative GPA = 3.0). The average GPA of registrants is 3.6, with top grades in science courses.
- Research experience in a wet laboratory setting. A minimum of 1,000 hours of lab experience is expected. Computer-based research is acceptable for students with strong interests in bioinformatics.
- Scientific presentations at regional or national conferences.
- Co-authorship in peer-reviewed biomedical journals.
- Co-authorship in a peer-reviewed journal is expected for all foreign applicants.
- Strong letters of recommendation from science mentors who can evaluate the applicant’s motivations and research potential.
- Motivation to pursue state-of-the-art biomedical research and long-term plans for a career within the biomedical workforce.
- The GRE is no longer required but may be submitted as supporting information through BiomedCas; institution code 4090.
English Proficiency
Applicants whose native language is not English must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Duolingo English Test. Official results from the TOEFL ibT Home Edition are acceptable. We do not accept TOEFL Essentials results. When registering for TOEFL request that your score be sent to BiomedCAS, institution code B765. When registering for the IELTS request that your score be sent to the University of Miami, institution code 4862.
