Programs in the Biomedical Sciences (PiBS)

First-Year Program

PiBS is a first-year umbrella program and your gateway to eight prestigious biomedical programs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine; Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, Cellular Physiology & Molecular Biophysics, Human Genetics & Genomics, Microbiology & Immunology, Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology, Molecular Cell & Developmental Biology, and Neuroscience.
The coursework in the first semester ranges from molecules and cells to systems of human physiology. Lectures are balanced by breakout sessions, in which faculty members discuss primary literature with students in small groups. Students can select breakout sessions that match their interests. The core curriculum also offers critical learning opportunities in scientific logics, biostatistics, genomics, and analytical tools. In the second semester, students select individual modular courses offered in our eight biomedical disciplines. These courses cover topics of specific relevance to graduate programs or research topics. Students also complete a course in biostatistics and bioinformatics.

In addition to laboratory rotations, the program's comprehensive common core curriculum provides a rigorous foundation for further biomedical training. Coursework is accompanied by small group modules in which trainees critically evaluate the primary literature with the guidance of faculty facilitators. The success and wellbeing of each trainee is of paramount importance to the program. To that end, each trainee participates in regular mentoring groups led by dedicated faculty and senior graduate students.

PiBS is also committed to the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Our dedication to our individual and holistic approach drives outstanding student achievement and success. Your future biomedical career begins with PiBS!

Each trainee receives a full tuition waiver, health insurance, and a stipend to cover living expenses. This financial support allows trainees to focus on their education and scientific development; free from the worry of tuition or burden of teaching assistantships.

Laboratory rotations also offer unparalleled flexibility for trainees to explore diverse disciplines before committing to a specific program. Each year PiBS trainees take full advantage of this flexibility with many choosing a program that they did not initially rank as their first choice.
