Disability Services
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Medical Scientist Training Program believe in including all individuals and encourages those with diverse backgrounds or disabilities to apply. The Miller School follows technical standards for medical training in accordance with the Americans With Disabilities Act. Medical education requires that the accumulation of scientific knowledge be accompanied by simultaneous acquisition of skills and professional attitudes and behaviors needed for the practice of medicine in a variety of clinical situations. Technological compensation can be made for some disabilities in certain areas, but a candidate should be able to perform in a reasonably independent manner. With these guiding principles for medical training, we welcome applications from individuals with disabilities. Each applicant is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
The Office of Disability Services (ODS) is the primary university office responsible for the coordination of auxiliary aids and services for students with disabilities. ODS provides academic accommodations and support to ensure that students with disabilities are able to access and participate in the opportunities available at the University of Miami. Individuals with disabilities must request academic accommodations through the ODS. Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis and are based on the documentation provided by the individual.
ODS staff will work collaboratively with students to determine what academic adjustments and educational auxiliary aids are reasonable to ensure that students with disabilities are not subject to discrimination. In this regard, documentation is reviewed and accommodations are assigned in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990(ADA), including the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008.
